Week 14: Reflection

I didn’t know what to expect when I started this class. In my mind I thought it would be a class that would have you try and go start your own small business as the class projects. What this class actually became was a class all about finding myself and learning how to organize my life so that I get the most out of all of my experiences.

When I first saw that we also had to read 3 books this semester I didn’t know what to think. My other business classes have a lot of reading and most of the content is really dry, hard to follow, and not something I would choose to read during my free time. This class was different. The books were inspirational as they usually told someone’s person experiences and how they had learned what it took to find themselves.

There was a story in one of the books that I will never forget. It talked about a businessman that went to go visit a small village in South America. He watched as a seasoned fisherman went out for the day and caught the most expensive and beautiful fish. He was only out long enough to catch what he needed and then he would go home, feed his family, and have the rest of the day to spend with them and close friends. The businessman approached this fisherman and asked him why he didn’t spend the entire day out there, sell these amazing fish, and make great profit from it. It was the perfect business. The fisherman asked, “what would I get in the end?”.  The businessman replied that after years of building this business he would then have enough money to take life slow, spend time with his family and enjoy his earnings.

The reason why I love that story is because it teaches us a very important lesson. Sometimes we already have all that we have ever wanted, but we need to open our eyes and see it. We shouldn’t chase money because that won’t get us very far and we probably won’t be happy. Instead, we should live our life with the purpose of enjoying what we already have and being grateful for what we are given.

That is, for me, the purpose of this class. It is to help you see what being an entrepreneur would be like, and it is a lot of hard work, but ultimately it is to help you recognize the important things in your life that you shouldn’t push to the side. Finding the balance between the two is going to be the best thing you can figure out for yourself. The rest of it will figure itself out, and in the end you will be happier knowing you followed what was best for you.
