Week 6: So you want to be an Entrepreneur?
I have really been enjoying the book we are reading on Mastery. It is opening my eyes about things that I need to change so that I can experience what it feels like to enjoy mastery of something. I am a person that learns things very quickly, and I thrive on being able to pick up new knowledge and skill and remembering it. Something that I learned from the reading was that to become a master at something this is actually the opposite of what you want to do. The beauty of mastering something comes in the mind set of always being a beginner and taking things slow.
This brings me to my next thing, which is the patience you need to be a master and to teach others when you do become one. That is not one of my strong suits. Since I tend to learn things quickly and it feels easy to me, I get impatient with others who take it slower and are struggling to grasp the concepts. In the book Mastery the author explains that he once had the same mindset when he was a pilot instructor for the first time. He didn't want to spend his time on students who did not pick up the concepts right away.
I also tend to shy away from things that I do not pick up as quick, because I don't like being seen as a failure. Who does? It is always uncomfortable to be the person that is messing up all of the time. The author described this as an essential part of the mastery process. It is expected to have this period of time where you are struggling with attaining a skill.
In the other readings we had this week the thing that struck me the most was how important it is to create boundaries and rules if you want to be a successful entrepreneur. It is so easy to let work overtake everything around you and soon you are neglecting your family life and your relationship with Heavenly Father. It is important to set boundaries like having dinner every night as a family, always being there for the night time process and creating a balance so that you don't miss out. Time is precious and it is something that you will never get back. When you get to the end of your life no one is going to care what companies you started or how much money you made. You won't even care. You will think about how you spent your time and who you chose to spend it with.
