Week 1 Reflection-Getting the Gears Turning

I'm not going to lie, I have never really thought of myself as someone who could be an Entrepreneur. I have the skills to learn things quickly and I have the memory to use that knowledge for my advantage, but I have never understood how to use those things to my benefit. Where do I start?

Lessons Learned:

When I first saw all of the reading I had to do it was a little bit daunting. It has been two years since I was last in school, but I am reading to challenge my mind again. Some of the main things that really stuck out to me were first from Elder Bednars address to the students at Ricks College. He talked about the Law of Consecration and that it can apply to any part of your life, no matter what you end up doing. When you are willing to sacrifice everything you are for a purpose greater than yourself then you are living that law.

Living Life as An Entrepreneurial Hero by Jeff Sandefer had a lot of points that I really connected with. One of them was that you will become who you decided to surround yourself with. Right now I am working at Alaska Airlines and there is a wide range of people who work there. Some people are just there for the benefits, some want to become leaders and some are fine with doing the same thing day in and day out. I have always seen myself as someone who wants to progress, keep moving up, and become a leader no matter where I work. This was a good reminder to not get caught up in the gossip and negativity that some people have and instead surround myself with those who will help me achieve my goals.

I really loved what Gordon B. Hinckley had to say. Specifically one line where he said when you are getting ready in the morning, look at yourself in the mirror and say "I can do the right thing today, God being my helper. And I will do it."

Lessons not yet learned:

There is a lot I still need to learn, not just in this class but about myself and where I see my life in the years to come. Even though I feel like a lot of what I read and watched was something I could learn from, applying it is where I always have the struggle. I haven't yet learned how to use these new principles and put them into my goals and then my goals into action. How do I take words on paper and make it into something where my character grows and I progress?

What I am looking forward to and learning:

After pondering and being able to reflect and I know that this will be a class I am excited to take. There is so much that I have from this weeks reading to take and apply and it will be interesting to be able to come back and see my progress and how my problems become my strengths. I am excited to learn what challenge I want to pursue and which small steps to start with. In the video with Jim Ritchie about the introduction to Launching Leaders he listed 10 friends he will be introducing me to through out this course. They were books that I have heard great things about, but never have had the opportunity to read yet. I am looking forward to getting insights from many different view points and skills.

I don't know what type of Entrepreneur I want to be yet, but all I know is that I am not meant to work a 9-5 job that is repetitive and predictable. I like problem solving, being a leader and seeing progress happen. I am hoping that with this class as I apply myself I will be able to have an answer to where I want to be.
